East Anglia Youth Rowing (EAYR) is a new and exciting project, led by Tony Nelder, President of City of Cambridge Rowing Club. The initiative targets children and communities most in need who have the chance to benefit from the positive impact of rowing, both the physical and mental benefits.
EAYR aims to introduce rowing to 2,500 to 3,000 students in four state schools in East Anglia (all of which have a high percentage of pupils receiving free school meals). The project is all about emphasising fun, participation and making them feel like they belong. The pandemic has exacerbated inequality and poverty in rural areas, which have seen the highest level of closures of the Government's Sure Start children's centres and youth clubs that provided crucial support to families in the areas the project will work in.
In October, in partnership with Love Rowing, Zoom Ergos participants successfully raised £2700, which was enough to fund the first school to join the EA Youth Rowing project. Love Rowing will donate a further £2700 to fund another school to participate.
As we all know, rowing is a powerful sport that can improve physical health and have a huge impact on a child's mental health. Rowing can also aid concentration, behaviour and academic achievement at school and increase confidence, self esteem and self-worth, which is why Love Rowing is so excited to be helping this Project to support children in local communities most in need.
The Project will fund a rowing coach and rowing machines at the partner school who will teach weekly indoor rowing sessions. These will be enhanced with open access water rowing sessions at partner rowing clubs. The cost for each school to get started is just £2700, which covers coaching costs and mean 680 students will have access to rowing from January to July.
If you would like to donate to East Anglia Youth Rowing and help us fund another school’s participation, please donate directly to our Just Giving Page below. We are hoping to hit the target next month!
