Based in Falmouth, Carrick Rowing Club is a very new club, which bills itself as ‘an inclusive community of welcoming members’. Founder of Carrick RC, Emma Nunn, was recognised in the 2021 British Rowing Awards as Volunteer of the Year for the West region, having taken the club from conception to a base of 40 committed and enthusiastic members in less than a year during the pandemic.
Carrick RC was granted funds from Love Rowing to part-fund refurbishment of two 2nd hand coastal quads, which will be used to set up a schools engagement programme to offer rowing opportunities to local young people on free school meals. Participants aged 11-16 will take part in a free rowing day, which will educate them in the basics of rowing, including safety on and off the water, boat handling, and working together in a crew.
Refurbishment of the coastal quads – including fixing dents and scrapes, resealing, and new riggers – has been successful, and with the better weather and calmer water of spring, Carrick RC will soon host the first of their school engagement sessions. We will be checking back in later in the year to learn more about the project and progress – watch this space!
