Row the Rhythm
In 2023, Love Rowing worked with Peterborough City Rowing Club to pilot an introductory rowing programme for people with a visual impairment. The success of this initial pilot led to the formation of ‘Row the Rhythm’. Peterborough City Rowing Club’s Row the Rhythm has gone on from strength to strength with monthly Row the Rhythm introductory sessions, weekly development sessions for those wanting to learn to row and support to become members including a volunteer buddy and subsidised fees. Transport and social activities have been included throughout.
Over the course of the summer 2024 and to the summer of 2025, Love Rowing was able to raise funds and support further Row the Rhythm pilots at Hereford Rowing Club, Leicester Rowing Club and Fulham Reach Boat Club. This was supported by the expertise and mentoring of Kate Lindgren and Pete Forrest at Peterborough City Rowing Club.
Making a Difference to the Lives of People with a Visual Impairment.
Fitmedia kindly supported the programme (value in kind donation) with an independent evaluation. The evidence of impact is truly amazing.
The independent 2024 evaluation of Row the Rhythm showed remarkable results:
- 90% of participants reported improved physical health.
- 85% said their quality of life had improved.
- 76% felt more confident in everyday life.
- 95% want to keep rowing, with 70% already planning to join their local club.
Mary, a participant, described rowing as “like a light in a dark room.” John, who lost his sight later in life, said rowing gave him “a sense of achievement and community again”.
These stories are at the heart of what we do and why we believe in the power of rowing to transform lives.
Clubs also benefit: every participating club reported greater inclusivity, improved coaching skills, and stronger community ties.
